Having spotted a lioness and her 2 cubs the previous day, I noticed the female looked like she hadn't eaten in a while, so returned to find her the next morning. I saw her with a tiny red lechwe, no more than a few days old. The baby antelope, who had clearly been separated from its mother, was too young to realise it was in danger and for a while followed the female lioness as she used the opportunity to teach her young cubs how to hunt. The whole scene would only have one ending and was not easy to watch but it served as a reminder of the harsh realities of survival in the natural world. Lion cub mortality rates have been measured as high as 80%, so the odds are heavily stacked against them.
